The Search for an Optical Counterpart
نویسندگان
چکیده
We report results of follow-up multicolor photometry of the optical variable source that is a probable remnant of the gamma-ray burst GRB970508 discovered by the Bep-poSAX satellite (IAUC 6649). Observations were carried out in Johnson-Kron-Cousins BVR c I c system with the 1-m and 6-m telescopes of SAO RAS. Between the 2nd and the 5th day after the burst a fading of the remnant is well fitted with an exponential law in all four bands. During this period the 'broadband spectrum' of the object was unchanged and can be approximated by a power-law, F ν ∝ ν −1.1. After the 5th day the decline of brightness is slowed down. In the R c band until the 32nd day, the light curve can be described by a power-law relation, F t ∝ t −1.2 .

Archival search for recurrent activity at the position of the gamma - ray burst GRB 970228 optical counterpart
We have examined 8004 plates at the Harvard College Observatory Plate Collection searching for optical transient emission from the gamma-ray burst GRB 970228. This is the first archival search carried out so far for a gamma-ray burst with known transient optical emission. The total exposure time amounts to ∼ 1.1 yr. No convincing optical activity was found above 12.5 mag at the expected positio...

Observations of the Vela pulsar region with the Chandra X-ray observatory have revealed the fine structure of its synchrotron pulsar-wind nebula (PWN), which showed an overall similarity with the Crab PWN. However, contrary to the Crab, no firm detection of the Vela PWN in optical has been reported yet. To search for the optical counterpart of the X-ray PWN, we analyzed deep optical observation...
متن کاملA Search for Optical Pulsations from Two Young Southern Pulsars
We report on high-speed optical photometry of the radio positions of two young rotation-powered pulsars. No pulsations were detected from the optical counterpart proposed by Caraveo et al. (1994) for PSR B1509–58, with a 2σ upper limit on the pulsed fraction of < 12%, significantly lower than that measured in the five known optical pulsars. Given its low pulsed fraction, high optical luminosity...
متن کاملThe optical counterpart of IGR J00291+5934 in quiescence
Aims. The recent (December 2004) discovery of the sixth accretion-powered millisecond X-ray pulsar IGR J00291+5934 provides a very good chance to deepen our knowledge of such systems. Although these systems are well studied at high energies, poor informations are available for their optical/NIR counterparts during quiescence. Up to now, only for SAX J1808.4-3658, the first discovered system of ...
متن کاملOptical Studies of the Transient Dipping X-ray Sources X1755−338 and X1658−298 in Quiescence
We have studied the optical counterparts of X1755−338 and X1658−298 in their X-ray “off” states. The first observations of X1755−338 in quiescence show that the counterpart, V4134 Sgr, has faded by more than 3.5 mag in V . If the mass donor in the system is an M0V star as implied by the period, our upper limits on the brightness of the counterpart suggest that it is more distant than 4 kpc. We ...

We present the results of first deep optical observations of the field of the old (∼ 10 yr), nearby, isolated pulsar J0108−1431, in an attempt to detect its optical counterpart. The observations were performed using the FORS1 instrument at the focus of the European Southern Observatory Antu Telescope of the VLT. Observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) were made to determi...
